Steal (2013)
Brass Quartet
Difficulty: 4
Duration: c. 7 minutes
Publisher: Studio Music
Steal was commissioned for the 2nd division contest of the Swiss National Solo and Quartet Championship 2014.
When I began composing Steal I had intended to write a piece of absolute music. However, as the creation of the piece coincidentally occurred alongside the theft of my new bike!
The piece itself is in three clear sections. The first is lively and positive, it’s buoyant rhythmic style representing the sheer thrill of bike riding. The second is more mournful and plaintive, recounting the disappointment and sadness felt at a moment of loss; the though music should still be lyrical. The final section is more aggressive in style, representing the moment of theft itself, though positive music from the first section reappears at the close of the piece; they after-all must be having a wonderful time on my bike!
