Proverbially (2012)
Concertino for Euphonium & Brass Band
Difficulty: 6
Duration: c. 8 minutes
Publisher: Studio Music Company
Proverbially is a concertino for euphonium and brass band composed for the burgeoning talents of Glenn Van Looy in 2011. The piece is structured in three individual movements, each around three minutes in length. Each movement is based on a particular modern proverb, said to me by my mother throughout my childhood. Important musical influences, ranging from my childhood the present day, permeate the score. The works lyrical yet angular style is almost certainly derived from some of my favourite stadium and progressive rock bands.
I. Between The Lines: Inspired by the phrase, 'reading between the lines', the solo line literally knits itself through a solid accompanying band structure, with contrasting riffs and melodies that transverse the full range of the euphonium.
II. Red Sky: Inspired by the proverb, 'red sky at night, shepherd's delight', this is literally a rich, tonal representation of the reds, oranges and yellows seen at sunset over the coastline of my home village of Southgate, on the Gower peninsula in Wales.
III. A Stitch In Time: Inspired by the proverb, 'a stitch in time saves nine', musical material; both in terms of pitch and phrasing, is constructed from groups of nine. The proverb is all about 'being prepared', which is certainly true for the works musical content. The soloist will need to overcome an irregular riff structure and balance with references to earlier movements.
